As we strive to change the race and gender balance of panels at academic conferences, we have been reaching out to underrepresented groups to invite submissions as part of our larger call for papers. We find that sometimes people just don’t know where to begin, and it’s time to change that!

Leslie Gaston-Bird

Leslie Gaston-Bird (AMPS, M.P.S.E.) is the author of the book “Women in Audio”, part of the AES Presents series and published by Focal Press (Routledge). She is a voting member of the Recording Academy (The Grammys®). Currently, she is a freelance re-recording mixer and sound editor and owner of Mix Messiah Productions specializing in 5.1 mixing. Prior to that, she was a tenured Associate Professor of Recording Arts at the University of Colorado Denver (2005-2018) where she also served as Chair of the Department of Music and Entertainment Industry Studies. She led groups of Recording Arts students in study abroad courses in England, Germany, and Italy which included participation in AES Conventions. Leslie has done research on audio for planetariums, multichannel audio on Blu-Ray, and a comparison of multichannel codecs that was published in the AES Journal (Gaston, L. and Sanders, R. (2008), “Evaluation of HE-AAC, AC-3, and E-AC-3 Codecs”, Journal of the Audio Engineering Society of America, 56(3)).

Bert Kraaijpoel

With a mixed technical/musical background Bert started his audio career as a recording engineer in the 1980s, the beginning of the digital era. He was mainly recording and editing classical music and jazz. He developed secondary activities, establishing professional training programs in audio technology, initially for broadcast engineers and later expanding to other audio (-visual) companies. At present Bert is a full-time lecturer at the Dutch Film Academy and at the Royal Conservatory, mainly lecturing in the areas of electro-acoustics and psychoacoustics.

Bert has been an AES member for over 25 years and during that period he has a long history as a committee member for the Dutch AES Section. He has served as its Secretary for the past 10 years. He has organized a multitude of section meetings and tutorials on various audio-related subjects and presented tutorials on microphones and digital audio. He is pro-active in encouraging communication with the student community.

Bert served as a member of the convention committee for the 124th AES Convention in Amsterdam in May 2008. In his spare time, Bert is a baritone singer in one of the larger choirs of the Hague and he is also an enthousiastic amateur photographer.

Jamie Angus-Whiteoak

Professor Emerita of Audio Technology at Salford University. Her interest in audio was crystallized at age 11 when she visited the WOR studios in NYC on a school trip in 1967. After this she was hooked, and spent much of her free time studying audio, radio, synthesizers, and loudspeakers, and even managed to build some!
After secondary education in Scotland, in 1973 she attended the University of Lethbridge in Alberta Canada. There, in addition to her studies in physics, music, computing, drama, philosophy, and english composition, she repaired their VCS3 synthesizer, and so obtained coveted access to the electronic music lab.

She then studied electronics at Kent (UK) doing her BSc and Ph.D. there from 1974 to 1980. During her Ph.D. study, she became interested in A/D conversion, and worked on a sigma-delta approach, but had to give it up to concentrate on her Thesis topic of designing a general-purpose Digital Signal Processor. After her Ph.D., she joined Standard Telecommunications Laboratories, which invented optical fibres and PCM. There she worked on integrated optics, speech coding, speech synthesis, and recognition in the early 80s, and invented a novel 32kBits speech coding method. She has been active in audio and acoustic research since then.

She was appointed as the BT Lecturer at the University of York in 1983, to develop the first integrated masters (Meng) in Electronic and Communication Engineering in conjunction with British Telecom. She then co-created the UK’s first Music Technology course in 1986 when it was considered a “silly idea”! She is the inventor of; modulated, wideband and absorbing diffusers, direct processing of Super Audio CD signals, and one of the first 4-channel digital tape recorders. She has done work on signal processing, analogue circuits, and numerous other audio technology topics. She teaches audio and video signal processing, Psychoacoustics, Sound reproduction, studio design, audio, and video coding, and loudspeaker and microphone design. She has co-written two textbooks and has authored, or co-authored over 200 journal and conference papers and 4 patents. She is currently investigating environmentally friendly audio technology. She has been awarded; the AES Silver medal, an AES fellowship, and the IOA Peter Barnet Memorial prize, for her contributions to audio, acoustics, and education.
For relaxation she likes playing drums and dancing, but not usually at the same time.

Sexual Harassment in the Industry Seminar

SoundGirls will be hosting Kim Warnick, the Executive Director of Calling All Crows, Kim has over a decade of sexual violence prevention and response experience, including a specialized focus on workplace sexual violence since 2016, and six years of music industry experience, she was uniquely situated to design and lead the #HereForTheMusic campaign to prevent sexual violence at concerts and festivals.

The seminar will cover:

Kim Warnick, the Executive Director of Calling All Crows, is a professional with program design, project management, event production, facilitation, and communications experience in corporate, start-up, and nonprofit organizations. With a decade of sexual violence prevention and response experience, including a specialized focus on workplace sexual violence since 2016, and 6 years of music industry experience, she was uniquely situated to design and lead the #HereForTheMusic campaign to prevent sexual violence at concerts and festivals. After 9 tours with 3 different artists, she has opted to get off the road and settle into Long Beach, CA, a westward migration from spending most of her life in NH and MA. She holds a BA in Sociology from Harvard University, where her studies focused on social movements, organizational culture, and conflict and peacebuilding, including an intensive study in Rwanda.

 

New Decade – New Year

The New Year and a new decade have begun! Thoughts of reinvention and feelings of excitement fill the air. This time of the year can often feel overwhelming. For me, I am in between apartments, jobs, and I just finished up my bachelor’s and am headed into a master’s program. Life has been a roller coaster.

It is no secret that the audio and music industry can be challenging, but as a young woman, I have definitely been feeling the pressure to find work and be successful. Something I am sure we all feel. There has also been a lot of talk amongst my friends and peers about depression and seasonal depression. It seems to flourish in the cold, dark months. I myself have been struggling with it. I wanted to do something proactive to combat these negative thoughts and emotions and to welcome in the New Year in a positive way. So I looked to my community for support and ideas.

Now, one thing you may not know about me is that I am the founder of the Michigan Technological University SoundGirls chapter. It is something I am incredibly proud of and sad to have moved away from. It’s okay though, I left it in good hands.

A few weeks ago, I emailed some of the members of this organization and asked them to fill out a short set of interview questions. Many of these young women I consider my family, if not friends. One response in particular not only brought me joy, but hope for a brighter future for all of us in this amazing, yet challenging industry.

Izzy Waldie is a first-year Audio Production major and the newly elected secretary of the Michigan Tech SoundGirls chapter. She is not only incredibly creative but also very good at STEM classes. Something I have to admit, I am not good at. Because she is still in her first year, I asked Izzy a few ice breaker questions.

Sarah: “So Izzy, what are you excited for or looking forward to in your time here at Michigan Tech in the visual performing arts department?”

Izzy: “I’m just really looking forward to doing more projects with people, and making stuff I’m really proud of.”

When asked about the university chapter specifically, she responded with;

Izzy: “Next semester I really want to do some creative projects with SoundGirls. We will be finishing up our movie project which will be really cool, but I want to do more projects. I was thinking of maybe just us recording a song. Nothing fancy, it could be just for fun, and we could do it with all the musicians in the organization. Now that I’m on the management board I really want to help head up some of these projects.”

When I was in my first year at Michigan Tech, I was one of two female students out of the two audio programs. Now, those numbers have been multiplied by at least five. The fact that there is an organization where students can go, create things together, learn and refine their skills, all while being supportive of each other, makes my heart melt. It reminds me that life isn’t always a challenge. Their excitement makes me excited.

Sarah: “Recently you said you don’t know what you are doing and I wanted to talk to you a little bit more about that. It is my opinion that you don’t need to know exactly what you are doing and it is more important to know what you don’t want to do. By exploring different areas and avenues, you are figuring out what you are doing or at least what you want to do. What are some things that you are exploring, interested in, or new things you might want to try out?”

Izzy: “I’ve definitely realized that what you already know isn’t as important as how willing you are to learn. I still don’t know what I’m doing, no one ever knows 100% what they’re doing, but I definitely have learned a lot this semester. I’ve seen this the most working at the Rozsa (The Rosza Performing Arts Center), I had basically no experience at first, but now I’m working the sound and lighting boards pretty confidently. One thing I really want to get more into is recording. I’ve helped out with some other people’s projects and would like to work more creatively with it.”

Izzy made the observation that most students might overlook. What you already know isn’t as important as how willing you are to learn. Not only was she a student in the organization I was president of, but I was also a teaching assistant for one of her classes. This statement is a testament to how she is as a student and how she approaches learning situations. It is an excellent characteristic to have for the industry that she is headed into.

I was feeling revitalized by the end of our conversation. I had received new hope, excitement, and appreciation from talking with Izzy. To finish out the conversation I asked her something a little more personal.

Sarah: “Tell me something good that happened this semester in our department that you will remember for a while, that makes you smile?”

Izzy: “This semester was awesome. Never did I think I’d be so involved as a first-semester student. One of the best parts for me was working on the haunted mine. (A project that the visual performing arts department collaborates with the Quincy Mine owner on every Halloween). We were down there for a really long time but the idea was really cool and so were the people. I also really liked working in the different groups on the audio movie project. I made a lot of friends while working on this project and our Dr. Seuss The Lorax audio movie ended up being pretty fun to make. I remember one time, at like midnight a bunch of us were in Walker Film Studio working on one of the audio movies while passing around a 2-liter of Dr. Pepper.

Izzy’s responses were wholesome and honest. To me, she has a perspective that exceeds her age. It was a nice reminder when faced with the daunting challenges of moving to a new area, finding work, and starting anew. It was a reminder of why I chose this career field. I chose it for the exciting new projects, learning new things, and working late into the night with people you hardly know, but will soon feel like family to you.

Though our conversation had ended, I was feeling myself again and that was because of the connections and relationships I had made through our little SoundGirls chapter. At the core of SoundGirls, you will find this kind of understanding from its members. We are here to listen to one another, remind each other of why we are here and doing what we love, and create an environment that welcomes all who are seeking opportunities and support. I wish you all a prosperous and happy New Year.

 

The Secret to Being a Woman on the Road

 

The secret is there is no secret

If you want to tour or you want a career in this industry, you can and will make it happen. Dive in, work hard, prove you deserve every opportunity, and get the job you want.   Then once you get there remember:

You don’t owe anyone a thing.  You’ve gotten where you are with hard work, determination, and dedication. As women in these fields, we are often highly skilled and overly qualified for our jobs because we’ve had to prove it over and over again due to the bias in the industry.  You do not owe anyone around you justification for your accomplishments; it was your hard work that got you where you are today. Do not let someone’s negative energy, jealousy, or anger get you down. You’ve achieved a lot! Carry yourself with confidence.

Set your ego aside

When other women see you in your role, they’ll likely envy you and want to reach the goals you’ve already achieved. Help them, talk with them, share your story, and, most of all, support them. At some point in your career, you likely met someone you looked up to who helped you reach your dreams. Be that person for someone else.

Invest

Invest in yourself and in others around you. Build the environment you wanted when you started so others can get even more of a jump start. As women continue to break the barrier, let’s leave an easier path for those to follow than we had. Invest in the next generation just as those before you did for you.

Be kind

Sometimes we can get jaded as we continue to fight our fight each day. Resulting in taking our frustrations out on the wrong people.  Try to close the door of frustration and anger nightly to be able to start each day with a new perspective. Perspective is tremendous, try to see it from the other side before you act.  Grace and forgiveness will get you so much farther than anger and hate. Some people may take advantage of your kindness along the way, but it will get you farther in the long run.

 

Networking to Your Next Position

My job has taken me to many different places lately, where I’ve met many types of people and worked with many various organizations and labor groups.  Often, I encounter people who would like to break out of their current role to work for the businesses or tours they’ve met along the way. Frequently there are questions of how to take the next steps to reach their goals.  Here’s some advice.

Be eager and helpful

This will make a huge impact. You will leave a lasting impression; I guarantee it. This is your first step into new opportunities. Leave a positive impact by jumping in on any task. Help with the ‘bad’ jobs like feeder, decking, and barricade. Keep volunteering for tasks all day and when completed, ask what’s next; even better if 2 or 3 tasks can be passed to you at one time and you complete them all well the first time.

Listen and Respond

Listen to the directions given and respond, letting them know you understand what you are being asked. This is super simple to do.  Statements such as “I got it, no problem, or anything else I should do?” provide responses that let the leader know you are listening and jumping on the tasks at hand. Of course, make sure, you are completing these tasks to the best of your ability and if you are not sure exactly what’s being requested, ask questions. Then follow through letting the leader know that the project is done.

Follow-through

Contact them, submit your resume, if possible, stop by the office to talk outside of a job site, seek them out separately from an event.  We are going to be respectful of those we partner with. Sometimes you have to actively engage, question, and work your way toward the crews you want to be a part of. You will need to step out and ask for a meeting. Find an appropriate time to ask some initial questions onsite and follow up later.  Get the person’s name, role, and ask a bit about their company and if time allows to tactfully ask about their hiring process. Then when you’re not in the middle of a show, ask for a meeting or employment opportunity. You’ve already made your impression. They’ve already experienced your work ethic, and you’ve proved you follow through. This has a considerable impact on the decision-making process and could give you better chances.

If they don’t hire you, ask for constructive feedback. Be prepared to hear what you don’t want to hear but take that feedback to improve and move forward. Also, be prepared for the company to have concerns about poaching you from their partner and burning a relational bridge with a group they rely on. This is a hard thing for companies to navigate.  In the end, it is your choice who you work for, but companies and groups may need to tread lightly sometimes. Help them by tactfully making your intentions and plans know to all parties involved to not burn any relational bridges yourself.

SoundGirls Members who are actively pursuing a career in Live Sound or Concert Production are invited to shadow Monitor Engineer Aaron Foye. Aaron is currently on tour with Willie Nelson.

The experience will focus on monitor mixing. This is open to SoundGirls members ages 18 and over. There are two spots available for each show. Most call times will be at 11 am (TBD) and members will most likely be invited to stay for the show (TBD).

Beth O’Leary is a freelance live sound engineer and tech-based in Sheffield, England. Over the last ten years, she has done everything from pushing boxes in tiny clubs to touring arenas and spends a lot of her life in muddy fields working on most of the major festivals in the UK. She has a particular passion for flying PA, the black magic that is RF, travel, and good coffee.
